General Questions

What is AfriWidget?

AfriWidget is a free collection of everyday tools that run in your web browser. We have calculators for education (like GPA and exam aggregate), money (like loans and savings), health (like BMI and daily calories), and productivity (like invoice and password generators). Everything on the site is free, and you never need to sign up for anything.

We built AfriWidget for people who want fast, reliable answers without giving up their privacy. Every tool works the same way: you type in your numbers, the maths runs inside your own device, and you get the result on your screen. Nothing is sent to us, and there is nothing to remember or log in to.

Is AfriWidget really free?

Yes — fully free, and there are no plans to change that. There is no premium tier, no upgrade button, and no daily limit. You can use any tool as many times as you like, for as long as you like.

We cover the running costs of the site with simple display advertisements served by Google. That is the whole business model. We believe money tools, health tools, and study tools should be available to everyone, not locked behind a paywall.

Do I need to create an account?

No. AfriWidget does not have accounts at all. There is nothing to register, no password to remember, no email to confirm. You open a page, type in your numbers, and get your answer. That is the whole process.

We designed the site this way on purpose. Making someone create a login just to check their BMI or work out a loan payment adds friction for no good reason.

Which countries can use AfriWidget?

Anyone, anywhere. AfriWidget works in every country that has an internet connection. Our education tools include grading systems from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, because those are the systems our users ask about most. Our money and health tools use universal formulas that work the same worldwide.

Where you enter an amount of money, you simply read the result in whatever currency you use. The maths does not care about currency — it just works with numbers. So whether you are in Accra, Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg, London, or Toronto, the calculations behave identically.

How often does AfriWidget get updated?

Small fixes and improvements go out whenever they are ready, sometimes several times a week. New tools are added every few weeks, usually in response to suggestions from users.

If you spot something that looks out of date — for example, an exam grading rule that has changed since we last updated the page — please let us know. We treat accuracy reports as high priority and usually investigate them the same day.

Privacy and Data

Do you store the numbers I type into your calculators?

No, and this is not just a promise — it is how the site is built. Every calculation happens inside your own web browser, on your own device. Your weight, your salary, your exam grades, your loan amount — none of it is ever sent to us.

You can check this yourself if you are curious. Open your browser's developer tools (usually by pressing F12), click on the "Network" tab, then run any calculation. You will see no message sent to our server containing your numbers. When you close the tab, everything is gone.

What information does AfriWidget actually collect?

We collect the same basic, anonymous information that almost every website collects: how many people visit each page, which country they connect from, what kind of device they use, and how long they stay. This comes from Google Analytics, and it never identifies you as an individual.

What we cannot see: your name, your email, your exact location, what you typed into any calculator, or anything that could link your visit to you personally. The analytics data looks like "500 people visited the GPA page this week" — not "John from Accra visited at 3pm."

You can read the full details in our Privacy Policy.

What cookies does AfriWidget use?

We use three types of cookies, and we keep them to an absolute minimum:

  • A cookie for your cookie choice. This simply remembers whether you clicked "Accept" or "Decline" the first time so we do not keep asking you.
  • Analytics cookies from Google. These help us count visits and see which pages are useful.
  • Advertising cookies from Google AdSense. These help Google decide which ads to show you.

You can decline all of the analytics and advertising cookies from the banner that appears at the bottom of the page. Every tool still works perfectly if you do. You can change your mind later through your browser settings. Full details are in our Cookie Policy.

Do you sell my information to advertisers?

Never. AfriWidget does not sell, rent, or trade any user information. We have no commercial relationship with the advertisers whose ads appear on the site — Google handles that side of things entirely, and Google has its own rules about how data can be used.

The information we do collect (anonymous traffic statistics) stays with us and is used only to decide which tools to improve. Nothing is ever handed to a third party for money.

Accuracy and Reliability

How accurate are the results?

Every formula we use comes from a recognised, well-tested source. Health tools follow World Health Organization guidance and widely used medical formulas. Money tools use the same standard mathematics that banks and financial advisors use. Education tools follow the exact grading rules published by each exam body or university system.

Before we publish a tool, we test it against worked examples from those sources. If the official example says the answer should be 24.7, our tool must give 24.7 as well. We do not guess.

That said, no calculator can account for the real world perfectly. Your result also depends on what you type in. A small typing mistake, a wrong unit, or an assumption that does not match your actual situation will change the answer. So please treat the result as a careful estimate rather than a guaranteed final number.

Can I use AfriWidget results for important medical or money decisions?

AfriWidget is a planning and learning tool. It is not a doctor, not a bank, and not a licensed advisor. The results are a good place to start a conversation, but they should not be the only voice in it.

For anything about your health — a concerning BMI reading, a change in your cycle, symptoms that worry you — please speak with a doctor or a qualified health worker. For a mortgage, a loan, an investment, or a business plan, please speak with a bank or a licensed financial advisor.

The best way to think about AfriWidget is this: it helps you show up to those conversations better prepared, with numbers in hand and questions already forming. That is what we are good at, and that is what we are here for.

What should I do if a result looks wrong?

First, please check what you typed in. Nine times out of ten, an unexpected result comes from a small input mistake — a weight in pounds entered into a field that expects kilograms, or a number accidentally missing a zero.

If the inputs look correct and the answer still surprises you, please contact us. Tell us which tool you used, what numbers you entered, and what result you expected. Screenshots help too. We take accuracy reports very seriously and usually investigate them within 24 hours.

Which standard does the BMI calculator use?

Our BMI calculator uses the international classification published by the World Health Organization. That means:

  • Under 18.5 is classed as underweight.
  • 18.5 to 24.9 is classed as a healthy weight.
  • 25.0 to 29.9 is classed as overweight.
  • 30.0 and above is classed as obese.

Where our related tools go further, we use well-known formulas as well. For example, our daily calorie calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is one of the most trusted formulas in nutrition science. You can read the exact formula used on each tool's page.

Using the Tools

Do the tools work on a mobile phone?

Yes. Every tool is designed to work comfortably on phones, tablets, and desktop computers. The layout adjusts to fit small screens, and buttons are made big enough to tap accurately without zooming in.

We test on Android and iOS across many screen sizes. If a particular tool looks broken on your device, please send us a message with your phone model and the browser you are using — we will look into it right away.

Can I use AfriWidget without an internet connection?

You need the internet the first time you open a page, because your browser has to download it. Once the page is loaded, the calculation runs inside your browser and keeps working even if your connection drops. You can switch tabs, lose signal, and the tool will still give you an answer.

We are also working on a version that saves the pages for proper offline use, so you could come back later with no signal at all and still open the tool. If that matters to you, let us know and it will move up our list.

Can I save or print my results?

Yes. You can use your browser's built-in print function (Ctrl+P on Windows or Cmd+P on Mac) to print the page or save it as a PDF. Some of our tools, like the JSON Formatter, also include a "Copy" button that places the result on your clipboard.

A proper download-as-PDF button is on our list of improvements. If a specific tool needs one urgently for your work, please describe your situation through the contact page. Hearing real examples helps us decide what to build next.

Why does the GPA calculator offer different grading scales?

Because universities in Africa and around the world do not use one single grading system. Most universities in Nigeria follow a 5.0 scale set by the national education authority. Many universities in Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa use a 4.0 scale, closer to the system used in the United States. Some institutions have small variations of their own.

Our GPA calculator lets you choose the scale that matches your school, so the number you get back is the number your university would calculate. If your school uses a scale we do not show, message us with the details and we will add it.

How does the Password Generator make sure passwords are safe?

Our Password Generator uses a security feature built into your browser called crypto.getRandomValues. This is the same trusted random generator that security software uses, and it produces passwords that are effectively impossible for anyone to guess or predict.

Many free tools use a simpler and less safe method called Math.random, which looks random but follows patterns that smart attackers can learn. We deliberately avoid that.

One more thing worth knowing: the password is created inside your browser and never travels anywhere. Not to our servers, not to anyone. Once you close the tab, it is gone.

Embedding and Developers

Can I put an AfriWidget calculator on my own website?

Yes, for approved partners. If you run a blog, a school website, a small business page, or something similar, get in touch through the contact page and tell us which tools you would like to use and who your audience is.

We do not offer an instant embed code that anyone can copy. That decision is on purpose: a short review lets us keep quality high, prevent misuse, and make sure the tools look right on your site. We respond to partnership requests within a few business days.

Can I link to an AfriWidget page from my blog or social media?

Absolutely, and we are grateful when you do. If you are writing a blog post, a newsletter, or a social media thread and want to send readers to our loan calculator or BMI tool, please link freely.

The only thing we ask is that you do not copy our content word-for-word onto your own site. Linking is welcome; copying is not. If you want to reference us, a link back is the best way to do it.

Is there an API that developers can use?

Not yet, but it is on our roadmap. If you have a specific project in mind — for example, pulling our loan maths into a banking app, or using our GPA tool inside a university portal — please describe it in a message to us.

Real examples from developers help us shape what the API should look like. The more specific the use case, the better we can design for it. A few early partnership conversations are already underway.

Access and Support

Why can I not find a tool I used before?

From time to time we merge tools that do the same thing, or give them clearer names. When this happens, the old page redirects to the new one, but a bookmark you saved long ago might point at a slightly different spot.

Your best bet is to browse the category pages (Education, Finance, Health, Productivity) or the homepage, which always show the full up-to-date list. If you still cannot find something, message us with the name you remember and we will point you in the right direction.

The site is loading slowly for me. What can I try?

Try these steps in order — usually one of them does the trick:

  • Force a fresh reload of the page. On Windows or Linux press Ctrl+Shift+R, on a Mac press Cmd+Shift+R. This clears old cached files.
  • Turn off browser extensions for a minute. Ad blockers and content blockers sometimes interfere with how pages load.
  • Open the page in a private or incognito window. This rules out anything saved from earlier visits.
  • Check your internet connection. Try another website to see if the problem is on your end.

If nothing works, please send us the page address and, if you can, a screenshot of any error message. We take loading problems seriously.

How do I ask for a new calculator or feature?

Send us a message through the contact page. Describe the tool you would like to see, the problem it would solve, and who you think would use it. Real examples are much more useful than abstract requests.

We read every suggestion. Some of our most popular tools exist today because a user took two minutes to ask for them. If your idea fits the site and there is enough demand, it may well become the next thing we build.

Can I help AfriWidget in some way?

Yes, and there are several ways to do it. The most helpful things you can do are:

  • Tell us about bugs and wrong results. Your reports keep the site trustworthy.
  • Suggest tools you wish existed. We build in response to real user needs.
  • Share the site with friends, students, or colleagues who might find it useful.
  • If you write in another language — French, Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Amharic — get in touch about helping translate pages.
  • If you are a developer or a writer, let us know. We are a small team and welcome collaborators.

Every contribution, big or small, makes AfriWidget better for the next person who visits.

Still have a question?

We read every message and reply within two working days. No question is too small — if something on the site is unclear, we want to hear about it.

Everything You Should Know About AfriWidget

AfriWidget started with a simple idea: the everyday tools that people in richer countries take for granted — a quick way to check your BMI, work out a loan payment, or see how your savings might grow — should be just as easy to use for someone in Accra, Lagos, Nairobi, or Johannesburg. Not locked in an app. Not hidden behind a sign-up form. Just a webpage that opens, works, and gives you an answer.

The site has grown since then. Today there are more than 120 tools across four main areas: Education, Finance, Health, and Productivity. Every one of them is free. Every one of them runs inside your own browser. And every one of them is written and maintained with a single guiding rule: if it does not help someone, it does not belong on the site.

How our tools are built

Each AfriWidget tool is a self-contained webpage. When you open it, your browser downloads a small file that contains the logic of the calculation. From that point on, everything runs on your device. The maths happens in your browser, using your own processor. The result appears on your screen. No round trip to a server.

We use plain, everyday web technology for the tools themselves. We deliberately avoid heavy frameworks and complicated build systems, because those things make pages slower to load and easier to break. A simple page loads quickly on a slow connection and works on a five-year-old phone. That matters enormously when you consider that many of our users are on mobile data plans and mid-range devices.

How we check every formula

Before any tool goes live, we verify its formula against at least two trusted sources. For health tools, those sources are typically the World Health Organization, national health services, or published medical research. For finance tools, they are the standard mathematics that banks and regulators use. For education tools, they are the official rules published by each country's exam body or university system.

We then test the tool against worked examples from those sources. If the official example shows a specific answer, our tool must produce the same answer. Only then does the tool go live. Where there is no official worked example — because no authority publishes one — we cross-check with established calculators from reputable institutions and note the source on the page.

Privacy that is built in, not just promised

Many websites say they respect your privacy in a policy document that most people never read. We wanted to do something stronger. At AfriWidget, your privacy does not depend on us keeping a promise — it comes from the way the site is built.

Because every calculation happens inside your browser, there is no mechanism by which your inputs could be collected, even if we wanted to. There is no database of calculations. There is no log of what you typed. The strongest possible privacy is not needing to trust anyone in the first place, and that is what we have aimed for.

You can test this claim for yourself. Open the developer tools built into your browser, watch the network activity while you use a tool, and see for yourself that no message carrying your numbers leaves your device. We would rather you check than take our word for it.

How the site stays free

AfriWidget is supported entirely by display advertising through Google AdSense. There is no premium plan, no subscription button, and no plan to add either. A small amount of revenue from ads covers the cost of the servers, the domain name, and the many hours that go into building and maintaining the tools.

We deliberately keep the ads out of the way. They appear in fixed positions on the page, never between you and your result, never popping up as you type, and never disguised as part of the tool itself. If you see an ad that looks misleading or out of place, you can report it directly to Google using the small icon on the ad, and we would also appreciate a note through our contact page.

Designed for everyone

We work hard to make every tool usable by as many people as possible. The colour choices meet accessibility contrast standards. Interactive elements can be reached with a keyboard. Form fields are labelled so screen readers can announce them correctly. Where a page does not meet those standards, we treat it as a bug and fix it.

Language is the next frontier for us. AfriWidget is currently written in English, but tens of millions of our potential users are more comfortable in French, Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, or Amharic. Translating the site is on our roadmap. If you are a fluent speaker of any of these languages and would like to help, we would love to hear from you.

What AfriWidget is not

It is worth being clear about the edges of what we offer. AfriWidget is a tool for learning and planning. It is not a doctor. It is not a financial advisor. It is not a lawyer. It is not a substitute for any of those professionals, and it does not pretend to be.

Our mortgage calculator tells you what a monthly payment would look like at a given interest rate. It does not know your lender's specific fees, insurance requirements, or the rules that apply where you live. Our BMI tool gives you the same number a clinic would calculate, but it cannot examine you or know your history. Use our results as a starting point, and take them to a professional for the conversation that matters.

Getting in touch

A real person reads every message sent through the contact form. There is no automated bot filtering your words, and no ticket number that disappears into a queue. If you report a bug, we will investigate. If you suggest a tool, we will consider it carefully. If you just want to say hello, that is fine too.

AfriWidget is being built for the people who use it. Every tool that exists today exists because someone said it would help. Every tool that comes next will come the same way. If you have an idea, a correction, or a question, please do not hesitate to reach out.
