At Primary 7 level, candidates sit four compulsory national examination papers:

2. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) Best 8 Calculation
In Senior 4, students sit between 8 and 10 subjects. UNEB computes your candidate performance using your Best 8 Subjects, which must satisfy strict subject grouping criteria:
Compulsory Subjects: English Language and Mathematics must be included in the candidate's aggregate computation.
Science Requirement: At least two science subjects (e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Biology) must be included.
Humanities Requirement: At least one humanities subject (e.g. Geography, History, CRE, IRE) must be included.
Best Electives: The remaining spots are filled by the candidate's best scored remaining subjects (Agriculture, Commerce, Entrepreneurship, Literature, French, Luganda, Art, Music).
UCE Division Criteria:
Division 1: Aggregates 8 to 32, with a minimum of 7 credits (C6 or better) and passes in English and Math.
Division 2: Aggregates 33 to 45, with a minimum of 6 credits.
Division 3: Aggregates 46 to 58, with at least 3 credits or 8 passes.
Division 4: Aggregates 59 to 72, with at least 1 credit or 2 passes.
Division 9 (Fail): Fails to achieve minimum pass standard.

What happens if a candidate fails General Paper or Subsidiary Math in UACE?▼
If a candidate scores an F9 in General Paper or Subsidiary Math/ICT, they earn 0 points for that paper. However, as long as the student scores at least 2 Principal Passes (Grade E or better) in their main subjects, they still receive an official UACE certificate and remain eligible for direct university admission, albeit with reduced aggregate points.
Can a student with Division 2 in UCE take Science combinations in A-Level?▼
Yes, provided the student achieved strong Credit grades (Credit 3 or Credit 4 or better) in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Most secondary schools set specific subject-level entry thresholds for science combinations (such as PCM, PCB, BCM) regardless of whether the overall division was Division 1 or Division 2.
