2. How Semester GPA and Cumulative CGPA Are Calculated
Your Grade Point Average is a weighted mathematical calculation that balances the letter grade you receive in each course against the credit unit weighting (contact hours or course units) of that course:
Step 1: Calculate Course Quality Points (QP)
For each course enrolled, multiply the course credit units by the grade point value:
Quality Points = Course Credit Units × Grade Point Value
Step 2: Calculate Semester GPA
Sum all quality points earned across all courses in the semester, and divide by the total number of credit units attempted:
Semester GPA = (Total Quality Points Earned) ÷ (Total Credit Units Attempted)
Step 3: Calculate Cumulative CGPA
Combine all historical quality points across all completed academic years and divide by the cumulative sum of all credit units attempted:
CGPA = (Sum of All Quality Points to Date) ÷ (Sum of All Credit Units to Date)
3. Zambian Degree Honours Classifications
Upon completion of your undergraduate degree (typically 4 years for BA/BSc/BEd, 5 years for Engineering/Law/Pharmacy, 6 years for MBChB Medicine), your graduating certificate is awarded with one of the following official honours standings:
Distinction (First Class Honours)
Awarded to top scholars demonstrating mastery across advanced coursework and final dissertation.
Merit (Upper Second Class Honours)

At UNZA, CBU, and Mulungushi, a semester GPA below 2.00 places a student on Academic Probation (Warning). If a student remains below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters, they face academic exclusion (suspension or deregistration). Maintaining a GPA of 2.00 or higher is required for good standing.
How do supplementary (supp) examinations affect my GPA? ▼
Students who score a D+ (45–49%) are typically permitted to write a supplementary examination. Upon passing a supplementary exam, university senate regulations usually cap the recorded grade at a C (1.5 Quality Points / Bare Pass), regardless of the numerical score achieved in the retake.
What is the difference between UNZA's 5.0 scale and a 4.0 scale? ▼
UNZA and CBU assign 5.0 quality points for an A+ (Distinction 86%+) and 4.0 for an A (76–85%). In American-style 4.0 scales (used by some private universities in Zambia like Cavendish and Eden), both A+ and A are capped at 4.0 points maximum.
