What a Calorie Burn Estimate Tells You
A calorie burn calculator estimates the energy associated with an activity. It uses your body weight, the duration of the activity, and a measure of intensity called a metabolic equivalent of task, or MET. One MET roughly represents the energy used while sitting quietly. Higher MET values describe activities that generally require more energy per unit of time.
This page uses a common MET equation: calories are estimated from MET, body weight in kilograms, and minutes divided by 60. The equation is useful for comparing sessions and planning activity, but it is not a direct reading from your body. Real energy expenditure changes with speed, terrain, technique, fitness, temperature, equipment, rest periods, and individual physiology.

Use the same units and a consistent approach when comparing sessions. A brisk walk on a hill may require more effort than a flat walk at the same pace. A cycling estimate depends on speed, wind, grade, and whether the ride is outdoors or indoors. Strength training also varies with load, rest time, exercise selection, and how continuously you work. Choose the closest category and treat the result as a range in your mind.
Understanding MET Values
MET values come from activity compendia that group common movements by approximate intensity. They make it possible to compare a thirty-minute walk with a thirty-minute run without measuring every breath or heartbeat. However, a table value describes an average response. Your actual oxygen use may be lower or higher because of body composition, training status, age, medication, and movement efficiency.
The result can also be misunderstood because different systems count calories differently. Some estimates report gross calories, which include energy you would have used at rest during that time. Others report active calories above resting energy. Wearables may use heart rate and personal profiles, while apps may rely on a fixed MET table. Do not compare two numbers unless you know that their definitions and assumptions match.
Calories burned during exercise are only one part of total daily energy expenditure. Resting metabolism, digestion, non-exercise movement, sleep, illness, and recovery also matter. A large workout does not guarantee a large calorie deficit, and appetite can change after exercise. Health improvements such as stronger muscles, better cardiovascular fitness, mood, balance, and sleep are valuable even when the estimated calorie number is modest.
Using Burn Estimates Without Pressure
Movement does not need to be extreme to support health. Walking, dancing, gardening, household tasks, sport, mobility work, and resistance training can all contribute. Choose activities that are accessible and enjoyable, build gradually, and include rest. If you are new to exercise, start at a comfortable intensity and increase duration or frequency slowly rather than chasing a calorie target.
A calorie estimate should not be used to punish yourself, justify skipping meals, or compensate for eating. Adequate food and hydration support performance and recovery.
