Note on AS-Levels (Advanced Subsidiary): A = 20, B = 16, C = 12, D = 10, E = 6 points. If you complete the full A-Level in the same subject, only the full A-Level points are counted—they do not double-count.
The formula for cumulative tariff points is the sum of points earned across all non-overlapping qualifications:
Total UCAS Tariff Points = Points(Qualification 1) + Points(Qualification 2) + Points(Qualification 3) + ... + Points(Supplementary Qualifications)
If a student holds an AS-Level and a full A-Level in the same subject (e.g. AS History Grade A = 20 points, and A-Level History Grade A = 48 points), only the higher qualification (A-Level History = 48 points) is included in the total.
While specific university courses may require specific subject grades (e.g. AAA with an A in Chemistry), UK institutions generally align with four primary tariff bands:

Not all. While most UK universities make conditional offers in terms of UCAS Tariff points (e.g. "128 points from a minimum of three A-Levels"), highly competitive universities (such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and LSE) make specific subject grade offers (e.g. "A\AA with an A\ in Mathematics").
No. GCSEs are Level 2 qualifications and do not carry UCAS Tariff points. The UCAS Tariff is reserved exclusively for Level 3 qualifications (A-Levels, BTECs, T-Levels, IB, Highers). However, passing GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade 4 or above is almost universally required alongside your Level 3 points.
There is no statutory maximum cap on total points; however, many universities specify that points must be achieved from a maximum of three or four discrete qualifications (e.g. "128 points from three A-Levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies").
Yes. Cambridge International (CAIE) A-Levels and Pearson Edexcel International A-Levels are awarded identical UCAS Tariff points (A\* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24, E = 16) as domestic UK A-Levels.
